Whild pleased by Harriers showing

By BBC Sport
Wednesday, 28th July 2010
Kidderminster Harriers assistant boss Gary Whild says their 3-1 win at Redditch United was a useful exercise.Whild and Harriers boss Steve Burr have been running the rule over a number of trialists and were keen to see them in competitive action.

"Credit to our lads as some have been training with us but others haven't," he told BBC Hereford & Worcester.

"They have turned up and they tried to play and pass it on a difficult pitch and they did fantastically well."

Harriers fielded only two contracted players in their starting line-up and one of those, Kyle Hadley, gave his side a half-time lead after a solo run ended him with beating Reds keeper Jake Meredith from the edge of the area.

I don't think it's any secret that we need to add a few players

Kidderminster Harriers assistant boss Gary Whild

Harriers doubled their lead on the hour-mark when Pat Sayce netted but Danny Scheppel's deflected shot for Redditch immediately reduced arrears.

Trialist Joel Grandison made the game safe for Harriers on 67 minutes when he met a left-wing Dominic Morrell cross to finish neatly into the roof of the net from 12 yards out.

Whild felt the makeshift Harriers side had done well under what had been difficult circumstances.

"It is nice to see those lads who have trained with us in a game situation as it is difficult to look at them properly in training so it was a good exercise for us," he said.

"I don't think it's any secret that we need to add a few players, some young lads maybe and some experienced players.

"It is a bit of a juggling act but it's something we have got to sit down and decide upon," he added.

Whild felt the experienced Redditch side had been just the sort of opponents they had needed to fully test out their talented young players.

"I think that is exactly what those lads needed as technically they are all very good as they have been at professional clubs," he said.

"But the reality for them now is that is what they are up against and that was great for them tonight."

Harriers will next be in pre-season action on Saturday 31 July when they welcome Burton Albion to Aggborough (kick off 1500 BST).
