Matthews agrees to leave Harriers

By BBC Sport
Friday, 2nd July 2010
Matthews agrees to leave Harriers.

Kidderminster Harriers manager Steve Burr has confirmed striker Robbie Matthews has left the Blue Square Bet Premier club by mutual consent.Matthews still had a year to run on his Aggborough deal but Burr said both parties felt it best if he moved on.

"I wish Robbie all the best but it didn't work out for him at the back end of the season with me," he said.

"I think the travelling had a bit to do with that and he is now going to be playing for a club much nearer home."

Matthews was brought to Aggborough from Salisbury City by Burr's predecessor Mark Yates but struggled to find his form with Harriers.

He is now expected to move to Newport County as they prepare for their first season in the Blue Square Bet Premier.

Burr says the the departure of Matthews will give him a bit more leeway within the playing budget.

"A striker has been a target for us all summer and it still is as we need one in now," he told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"We missed out on Sean Canham who has signed for Hereford.

"But with Robbie going it releases money for us to use in wages," he added.

Steve Burr admits he was especially disappointed to have missed out on Canham's signature as he had been tracking the former Notts County front man as soon as he was released from Meadow Lane.

"I know for a fact we would have got him at that particular time but with a bit of uncertainty over what we would be working with we couldn't move on it," he said.

"At that time Sean was very keen on joining us.

"But obviously the lure of a good contract at Hereford and staying in the Football League just beat us to it I am afraid."
